Removing Acne Scars

A severe case of acne, as well as scratching or picking on it is bound to produce scars. There are different kinds of acne scars, and there is some form of treatment for each kind.

The best advice anyone can give you would be to prevent it from happening at all. As a general rule, one should refrain from picking or squeezing “pustules” or inflammatory acne. When we squeeze the acne, we’re pushing the infected material even deeper under our skin causing it to become even more inflamed which could lead it to leaving a mark.

But know this, there are a lot of ways to treat acne scars. Whatever procedure you choose, it should only take a short period of time, fifteen to maybe sixty minutes; on the other hand recovering from the procedure may take more time from fifteen minutes to a few months. Undergoing a treatment may have some temporary unpleasant effects on your skin like scabbing, redness, swelling, flakiness, dryness, bruising and uneven skin tone. Depending on the kind of treatment you’ll be undergoing, it may cost you from fifty dollars to about three grand.

Consult your dermatologist regarding the best treatment for you.

For acne scars that are only slightly deep, dermabrasion would be more appropriate. Nowadays, equipments with rotating diamond wheels are used to scrape off the outer layer of the skin so a new one will come out, but before that only sand paper was used.

A more advanced method used is laser resurfacing, which is a lot like dermabrasion. Controlling lasers are easier especially when it comes to how deep it should go in the skin, a definite advantage over dermabrasions and other techniques.

Chemical peels are particularly suited to very light scars. In order to bring out a newer and silkier skin, different types of acids will be used so that the old skin could be removed.

If your scars are deeper, then you can try out the punch technique. One method used for pitted scars is the punch replacement or excision, and skin grafts or sutures are usually the next procedure. The other way of treating these scars would be to cut it out and allow it to elevate itself until it is level with the skin; this method is called punch elevation.

Another method used, the subcision, separates the skin tissue from the scar tissue so that the pool of blood will fill in the gap. Once the blood clots, it will serve as another layer which will then help level the skin up.

For very deep acne scars, dermal fillers are often used. Fat or collagen is normally used to raise the skin so it will become level; this is usually done through injections. Six months is the usual length of time before you would need to visit your doctor again for another treatment, fortunately various research centers are already finding ways to improve this.
